Manokwari

Most expeditions begin in Manokwari simply because it has a large regional airport. However, it offers a unique blend of history and natural beauty that should not be overlooked. A hike through Arfak Nature Reserve, home to rare and beautiful Birds of Paradise, is a must. The diving is also quite extraordinary, especially for those with an appreciation for history. Manokwari's World War II wrecks include the Shinwa Maru, a Japanese cargo ship with impressive coral growth and machinery still visible; the Cross Wreck, a former patrol boat with colorful critters; and the Pillbox Wreck, a well-preserved cargo ship carrying ammunition.

Wairundi Island

Also known as the Broken Island, this hidden gem sits within Cendrawasih Bay National Park, the largest in Indonesia. The park's marine and coastal habitats remain undisturbed, allowing for an unparalleled underwater experience. Wairundi boasts some of the most magnificent coral reefs in the world, where visitors can witness an abundance of marine life and stunning coral gardens. The island itself is surrounded by pristine white sand beaches and coconut palms, and is home to a large pod of dolphins that frequently visit snorkelers and divers on the reef.

Kwatisore Bay

A year-round haven for these magnificent creatures, whale shark sightings in Kwatisore are almost guaranteed. These gentle giants linger at the surface for extended periods of time, feeding on the small bait fish stored in nets under the local villagers’ fishing platforms called bagans. But it's not just the whale sharks that brings us here. The name Kwatisore comes from the late afternoon fog that descends over the hills. You can look forward to treks through mist-covered rainforest, including encounters with the elusive bird of paradise that call Kwatisore home. And no trip to Kwatisore is complete without a visit to the local fishing village.

Tridacna Atoll

Discover the untouched beauty of Tridacna Atoll, a hidden gem in the heart of Cenderawasih Bay. Biak Island

This vibrant island offers white sand beaches, a rich history, and an international airport. Biak witnessed fierce confrontations in World War II and was an important airfield for the Japanese. Later, it served as a transit point for trans-Pacific flights. Today, however, Biak is a sleepy, beautiful island offering a long list of activities. For those with an eye for history, visits can be made to Binsari Cave, where the Japanese made their last stand. Adventurous guests often enjoy jungle hikes to Wasrafak Waterfall and even freshwater diving in the gin-clear waters of Telaga Biru Samares. Biak Island is a fantastic place to end a once-in-a-lifetime trip, and it absolutely has something for everyone.

Numfoor Island and Manim Island

After their success in taking Biak Island, the Allies launched an amphibious assault on Numfoor Island. While sweeping south around Manim Island, seven landing craft were lost to Japanese fire. These wrecks — important pieces of history — now lie in crystal-clear water, are covered in coral, and host a wide variety of rare and beautiful marine life. Ringed with white sand beaches, WWII shipwrecks, spectacular reefs that serve as a nursery for grey reef and white tip sharks, and hidden coves, Numfoor and Manim are sure to sweep you off your feet.

Roon Island

Roon Island sits just off the coast of West Papua, in the heart of Cenderawasih Bay, and is surrounded by small, uninhabited, jungled-capped islands. With some of the best and most diverse diving in Cenderawasih Bay, Roon Island is off the beaten track and is truly something special. Expect to see masses of soft corals, hawksbill turtles, and reefs teeming with life. These locations are remote, inaccessible, and visited only by the most adventurous and well-traveled. 
Sharks, Mantas, and Stunning Reef

Mangguar Cape

Farther south from Roon Island, you will find Mangguar Cape. This small finger of jungle reaches out into Cenderawasih Bay from the mainland and attracts a whole host of rare pelagic marine life. Dozens of grey reef sharks patrol the deeper edges of the reef, with massive shoals of barracuda and even manta rays and mobulas. It's far, it's out of the way, it's off the beaten track, and it is not to be missed.
